Brown Discharge During Sex: What It Says About Your Hormones and Reproductive System

Brown vaginal discharge before or after your period is exactly that, and usually not something to worry about. Through a natural process of oxidation, blood that is exposed to oxygen turns from red to brown.

Before your period, brown discharge can be due to just a small amount of bleeding and therefore a very light blood flow. It takes time for blood to flow from your cervix until you see it, and during this time, the blood gets older. The oxidation of that old blood makes it appear brown by the time it gets to your underwear.

During menstruation, your body sheds its uterine lining, and the result is a mix of blood, mucus, and endometrial cells. What this means is that your discharge consistency can vary quite a bit each day of your period. It might be thin and watery on some days and thick and clumpy on others.

Some contraception methods like IUDs or implants release the progestin hormone into your body to prevent you from getting pregnant. As your body adjusts to the new form of birth control, you might experience side effects such as irregular menstruation, spotting, breakthrough bleeding and brown discharge.

PCOS is a fairly common hormonal condition that affects one in ten people with vaginas of reproductive age (15-49 years old). Its exact cause is unknown but likely has to do with genetics and excess insulin in the body. People with PCOS have an imbalance of reproductive hormones: Their bodies produce higher levels of hormones called androgens, resulting in irregular or missed periods. One symptom of PCOS is brown discharge instead of your period. Other symptoms include irregular menstrual cycles, acne, excessive hair growth, obesity, infertility, ovarian cysts, and dark patches on the skin.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition that occurs when the tissue that is normally in your uterine lining starts growing in other areas, such as your ovaries, fallopian tubes, or bowels. People with endometriosis experience irregular bleeding and heavy periods, and they may occasionally notice brown discharge from internal bleeding related to their condition.

You may just be having some slight irregularities in your cycle. When someone starts a new hormonal treatment or birth control, sometimes their period is replaced with brown discharge or light spotting for the next several months as their body adjusts.

Brown discharge instead of your period could be an early sign of pregnancy. About one to two weeks after a fertilized egg attaches to your uterine lining (which occurs during ovulation), you may notice some pink or brown blood from implantation bleeding.

In rare cases, dark brown discharge during pregnancy can be a sign of miscarriage. Other possible signs of miscarriage include cramps, so if you are experiencing cramping along with unusual discharge, it may be worth calling your doctor.

Blood in your discharge could also be the result of trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by a live parasite in your vagina and/or urethra. Just like a scratch on your skin can make you bleed a little, so, too, can this parasite aggravate your insides.

The mucus plug is a thick piece of mucus that blocks the opening of your cervix during pregnancy. It forms a seal to prevent bacteria and infection from getting into your uterus and reaching your baby. Think of it as a barrier between your vagina and your uterus where your baby is. You will lose this plug as your cervix begins to dilate (open) and efface (soften and thin) in preparation for labor.

You may lose your mucus plug in one glob or you may lose it gradually over time and never notice it. A small amount of blood is common, but severe bleeding may be a sign of placental abruption, placenta previa or other pregnancy complications. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice heavy bleeding during pregnancy.

Increased vaginal discharge is normal in pregnancy. Vaginal discharge is usually thin and light yellow or white in color. Discharge from the mucus plug is thicker, more jelly-like and there is more of it. It can also be tinged with red, brown or pink blood.

They are closely related but slightly different. Both occur late in pregnancy as your cervix dilates in preparation for labor. Mucus plug discharge is stringy and jelly-like. It is a collection of mucus. A bloody show is bloody discharge that can contain small traces of mucus. The bloody show is a result of blood vessels rupturing in your cervix as it expands.

You can go into labor without losing your mucus plug. The timing between labor and mucus plug discharge can vary. Some people lose their mucus plug after other labor symptoms begin. In some cases, losing the mucus plug is the first symptom.

Yes, the mucus plug can regenerate in your cervix. It's possible to lose parts of your mucus plug and then lose more later. This is because your body is constantly creating vaginal discharge and mucus during pregnancy.

If you are unsure if your discharge is the mucus plug, you can contact your healthcare provider. Be prepared to describe the discharge. Losing the mucus plug is a normal progression of labor and usually not harmful.

Discussing the signs of labor with your healthcare provider can be helpful and comforting during the last weeks of pregnancy. It's important to talk to your care team if you have questions about any of your symptoms.

Vaginal discharge happens almost every day. Usually, it is thin and clear or white. It may be in other colours too. But if it is brown, it means there are small amounts of old blood. This blood might have taken a long time to come out of the uterus. There could be a strong reason for brown discharge before period, such as:

Do you have a reason to think - brown discharge before period could I be pregnant? In some cases, pink or brown discharge or spotting before your period could indicate pregnancy. Such early signs of pregnancy are not experienced by all those who are pregnant.

Some women experience an implantation bleed that happens when the fertilised egg plants itself into the uterus lining. This generally happens 1 to 2 weeks after the egg has been fertilised. If you have experienced implantation bleeding post unprotected sex, you should take a pregnancy test. Speak to your doctor. However, brown discharge is rarely a matter of concern, even during pregnancy. In very rare cases, it may imply an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.

If you are in your 40s or 50s, brown discharge before the period could be a sign of perimenopause. This refers to the transition period before menopause when your periods stop. You might also experience:

You might be wondering, is it normal to have brown discharge before your period? It is normal to experience discharge once you hit puberty. Discharge is important as it keeps your genitals clean and healthy by disposing of the dead skin cells present in the lining of the vagina. It comprises mostly water but contains microorganisms. The nature of your discharge changes during the menstrual cycle. It depends on ovulation, sexual activity, use of birth control, and menstrual flow.

Some women experience uterine fibroids or non-malignant (non-cancerous) growths of muscle and tissue on the uterus. Some women may not realise they have it because there are no symptoms. It is usually discovered by a doctor performing a pelvic examination. Rarely, fibroids may grow out from the uterus, twist, and cut off the blood supply. This might result in pain and brown discharge.

Sometimes you might experience brown discharge before your period. This blood might be leftover from your previous period. When blood stays in your uterus for a while, it turns a brownish colour. It should typically come out at the tail end of your period. But sometimes, it may come out just before your next period. As your flow lightens, it is normal for you to get some brown blood.

Brown discharge could potentially indicate perimenopause. This is the transition period approaching menopause when you stop getting periods. At this time, your menstrual cycle will start becoming irregular, which may appear as spots.

There are rare cases where brown discharge may be due to a cervical infection such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Notice if an unusual smell accompanies the brown discharge. You might have other symptoms such as abdominal pain, a burning sensation during urination, pain during sex, and fever. Visit a doctor and get your PID treated with antibiotics.

Some STIs may cause vaginal discharge and spotting. This will be accompanied by pelvic pressure, painful urination, and pain during sex. Your doctor might prescribe antibiotics for this.

An ovarian cyst entails a fluid-filled sac that develops on or inside an ovary. They usually come and go. However, if one continues to grow, it may result in brown discharge. Call your doctor if you have other symptoms such as pain during urination or sex, pelvic pressure, or abdominal pain.

Endometriosis is a painful condition wherein the tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside it. This can cause heavy and painful periods and even brownish spotting between periods. You may also experience painful bowel movements and urination, difficulty conceiving, and pain during sex.

PCOS or PCOD refers to a hormonal imbalance wherein ovulation becomes rare or irregular. This makes it harder for women to conceive. You will experience light bleeding or brown discharge. You may have heavy, light, or no periods, excessive hair growth, dark patches of skin, oily skin, and weight gain.

This is rare but very serious. Brown discharge can sometimes imply cervical cancer. Some symptoms of cervical cancer include increased vaginal discharge, spotting between periods or after sex, and heavier or longer periods.

In most cases, brown discharge is simply discharge tinged with old blood. It looks brown, but it is quite normal. It might have taken more time for the blood to come out of your uterus, which is why it became brown in colour. 2ff7e9595c
